SEGMENT SYNOPSIS

EPISODE #14: LIFESAVERS

It's safety first this week when Tyler travels to Florida for a nuts-and-bolts lesson in building an armored car. He'll find out what kinds of gizmos are installed to ensure the safety of world leaders and others who fear for their safety. He gets to test the bulletproof glass by taking a whack at it with a sledgehammer, he'll try and drill through the opaque armor and he'll find out how the brake system and door hinges are specifically made to guarantee the safety of the people who ride in these cars. Safety like this doesn't come cheap with price tags running up to $200,000 each for a custom-built car but as Tyler finds out they're built to last and include devices to detect land mines, bombs and even grenades. Not for your average drive in the country!

Fearing nothing, Tyler turns into a modern-day Spiderman when he learns how to scale down the side of a tall building. Hooked up to safety harnesses and secured by strong ropes, Tyler finds out how to get to the top of a building and then how to rappel back down to the ground without hurting himself.

Elisha also gets a few pointers on safety this week when she prepares a family of crash-test dummies for a highway accident to see how our cars are made safe for us to drive. She'll set a real frontal impact crash in motion after she hooks up the 150 computer sensors on the dummies and then see what happens when the car crashes into a wall at nearly 40 mph. Later she'll see the results of the crash on a computer graph and discover how cars are engineered to make them as safe as possible. You can bet Elisha will remember to buckle-up after doing these tests.

Charlie also gets into the action when he teaches us how to build a portable burglar alarm and then uses a simple telegraph system to send for help.
