SEGMENT SYNOPSIS
EPISODE #12: ICE
Our hosts master the fine art of chilling out this week when Vanessa learns how the movie-making pros turn a hot and humid Hollywood afternoon into a winter wonderland complete with ice and snow.
First, she journeys to the factory that produces the ice and sees how 300-pound blocks of the frozen stuff are made, stored and then shipped on massive dollies and cranes. Then she catches up with a master ice-carver who sculpts and chisels eight blocks of the rock-solid ice until it looks like a real-life sports car. Will Vanessa climb into the automobile made of ice or will she get cold feet? She'll have to make her mind up pretty quickly as the ice car will melt a half an inch an hour under the sunny California skies.
Elisha gets to go indoors for her fun on the ice. She visits a major ice arena and learns what it takes to get the rink ready for an NHL hockey game. She'll make the very first ice of the new hockey season and then help paint the lines that guide the pros during a game. Then she gets the chance to actually drive the big Zamboni machine as it gets the rink ready for all the action.
Tyler needs his winter parka for his icy adventure in NASA's Ice Research Tunnel in Cleveland. He'll learn how planes are made safe for winter travel when he helps the experts scrape away the ice on an airplane wing. Tyler then discovers what we can learn from the ice build-up about avoiding dangerous crashes during winter storms.
Charlie shows off his fancy footwork when he teaches us the physics of figure skating.
