44 X Half-Hours Episode #1 BROWNSTONE FIRE Top Description of call: Firefighters respond to a brownstone apartment fire. Fire is located on 2nd floor but spreads to the top floor. Since fire has spread, firefighters are faced with the dangerous task of venting the roof. Within 20 minutes the fire is put out safely. Building resident Jacqueline Anderson believes the fire was caused by an electrical problem. Luckily the fire alarm alerted all residents who were able to escape safely. Synopsis: New York’s bravest battle a brownstone blaze, which has spread to the top floor. Firefighters are faced with the putting out the fire, knowing that the roof could cave in at any moment. Fire alarms safely alert resident out of the inferno. Log Line: New York brownstone goes up in flames. Firefighters vent blaze on shaky roof. 600LB MAN Top Description of call: Firefighters are called to assist EMS workers on removing a 600-lb man who is suffering from shortness of breath, from his apartment. Firefighters must widen doors in the hopes of transporting the man to an awaiting ambulance. The man’s wife is fearful of her husband's condition. The man is turned over to EMS workers, where CPR is performed. The man is sped to the hospital. At the hospital the man goes into cardiac arrest and is revived and is taken away by the doctors. Synopsis: It’s a race against time, where firefighters and EMS workers pair up to rescue a 600 lb man who is suffering from early signs of a heart attack. Log Line: 600 lb man trapped into his house goes into cardiac arrest. Description of call: Our Firefighters are called to a frame house fire in a Brooklyn neighborhood lined with framed homes. The neighbors look on as the firefighters fight to quickly contain the blaze. These homes share a common ceiling/roof that could easily ignite and cascade down the block. Firefighters must act quickly in order to keep all the homes out of jeopardy. Officer in command: Lt. Pete Lund Synopsis: Firefighters respond to a frame house fire that can quickly spread to the adjoining homes. Log Line: Firefighters put out a frame house blaze that jeopardizes a block of connecting homes. DOLORES ST. FIRE Top Description: Firefighters receive multiple calls from Dolores Street residents, which is a strong indication that this will be a big fire. Firefighters secure the roof and cut through to the floor below to assess the fire. They douse the flames and it is determined that the fire is out. As they investigate the cause of the fire they realize that it’s still burning in the walls. Efforts are redoubled to put out the blaze and this time the fire is out for sure. Synopsis: Firefighters respond to a house fire and quickly put out the flames. As they investigate the cause of the fire they realize there is a fire still burning in the walls. Log Line: Firefighters put out a house blaze, only it’s still in the walls. HAZ MAT Top Description: An auto repair shop calls the fire department when they are unable to determine the contents of a bin in their parking lot. HAZMAT (a special unit of the fire department) is called in to check anything that may be hazardous material. Two trained firefighters suit up in special gear and get a sample of the waste. A chemist tests it and declares it nothing more than water. Synopsis: The fire department is called to an auto repair shop to determine the contents of what looks to be acidic waste in the parking lot. A chemist tests a sample and determines it to be water. Log Line: The fire department is called to determine the contents of what looks to be hazardous material. Man On Roof Top Description: A man that has been evading capture from the police for twenty blocks finally gets stuck on a roof ledge. Firefighters are called to get him down. They decide not to use their ladders because of electrical wires. But then find a safer place to put the ladder to get the fugitive down. He comes down willingly as soon as the ladder is secured. Firefighter featured: John Darmanin – chase driver Synopsis: A man on the run from the police gets trapped on a roof and the fire department must come to get him down. Log Line: The fire department must rescue a fugitive stuck on the roof. Episode #3 WTC Dedication Segment Top Description: A touching and insightful look at the men from Rescue 1 and Rescue 2 who were lost in the World Trade Center disaster. This summer they shared with us their thoughts on the profession they love, their families, the brotherhood of the fire department, fear, adrenaline and the inherent dangers of the job. Firefighters Featured: Among those lost September 11th: Capt. Terence Hatton, Synopsis: Some of the firefighters from Rescue 1 and Rescue 2 who were lost in the World Trade Center disaster shared with us how they became firefighters, why they love the job and the reality of kissing your family goodbye when leaving for work and hoping you return. Officer in command: Bob Galione Synopsis: An auto repair shop in engulfed in flames. Firefighters attempts to extinguish the blaze quickly are hindered by the billowing clouds of smoke emanating from the shop. Firefighters struggle to confine the inferno to the shop, and keep in from spreading to the adjoining office. Log Line: Intense smoke hinders firefighter from extinguishing an auto shop blaze.
Meet Rescue 2 Top Description: The job description of firefighters at Rescue 2 in Brooklyn is extensive. As one of the men explains, they can handle it all because they are highly trained. They are dispatched to any emergency, ranging from car accidents and fires to collapses and hazardous materials. The information received en route to calls is crucial as it enable them to know what they’re getting into and to form a game plan. The most important part of the job, however, is making sure fellow firefighters stay safe. Firefighter featured: William Lake Synopsis: A rescue company firefighter gives an in-depth look at the range of emergency calls they respond to and their determination to keep fellow firefighters safe. City: New York Meet Rescue 1 Top Officer in Command: Synopsis: The firefighters in Rescue 1 introduce themselves and describe their trade. Devotion to their brothers, their families, and the public are all in the job description. The twin towers loom large in the background as the engine roars on a routine pass through that downtown area. Log Line: Meet Rescue 1 and hear their honest thoughts on their chosen career path. City: Brooklyn, New York Fire With Jumper Top Description of call: Firefighters respond to a fire on 45th Street and 9th Avenue on the 3rd floor of a walk-up. The firefighters climb the stairs of the Hell’s Kitchen building in full gear to a smoke infested hallway. All but one of the residents have escaped the flames uninjured. One man’s only recourse was to jump from his window. He sat on the sidewalk as he bled from severe injuries he sustained to his ankles when he jumped. Officer Featured: Deputy Chief John Casey, LT. Dennis Mojica Synopsis: Firefighters rush to the site of a blaze on Manhattan’s West Side. One man’s only escape is to jump from his window. He landed only with cuts on his head and foot. Log Line: A man must jump from his window to escape the flames from his Hell’s Kitchen apartment. Amtrak Attack Top Description of Call: Rescue 1 is dispatched to a site where a bystander was struck by a train. The firefighters immediately begin cutting away the chain link fence around the embankment that leads down to the train tracks. Half the team makes their way down to aid the victim, while the other half rigs a method by which to bring the stabilized victim to street level. The team down at the scene of the accident lays the bloody yet conscious victim on a backboard and ensures that he is stable. They carry him over to where the firefighters at street level have laid a ladder up which they will slide the backboard. Once the victim is brought to street level, he is tended to by the paramedics who have arrived on the scene. Officer in Command: Captain Terence Hatton Synopsis: Firefighters stabilize a man hit by a train and rig a method by which to get him up an embankment to street level. Half the squad gingerly tends to the man while the other half figures out how to get him up the embankment. City: New York Manhole Explosion Top Description of call: Manhattan firefighters are called to the site of a manhole fire in Queens. There are many possible scenarios when it comes to this sort of an emergency. The fire could potentially spread to surrounding buildings or further underground through the manhole system. They arrive on the scene to a spectacular display of bursting flames, popping manhole covers and colorful gases. Firefighters have evacuated some surrounding buildings but they must carefully check for carbon monoxide in all indoor areas surrounding the blasts. The fire, fortunately, was contained to areas only beneath the manhole covers. Con Ed will have their hands full when it comes time to repair the damage. Officer in Command: Lt. Dennis Mojica Synopsis: Manhattan firefighters are called to support Queens’ bravest in battling the elements involved in a manhole explosion. Carbon monoxide levels are monitored and the fire is contained in areas under the manholes. Episode #5 Victorian Fire Top Description: Firefighters rush to an old Victorian home where a fire is in progress. They ventilate the roof with power saws and hose the house from truck ladders. The fire is quickly put out and firefighters go through it to make sure there is nothing still burning that would cause the fire to restart. They then begin to investigate how the fire was started. Officer in command: Assistant Division Chief George Maloney Synopsis: A fire in progress has firefighters working from every angle to make sure it does not spread to neighboring homes. When the fire is extinguished, they investigate how the fire started. Log Line: Firefighters try to combat the flames destroying an old Victorian house. PETA Protest Top Description: Firefighters are called to get animal rights protesters down from the roof of a fast food chain. Dangerous wires make it difficult to position a ladder for their removal. The ladder is set up and they begin to bring the protesters down. The protesters go limp in the hands of the firefighters, making it a difficult job. The protesters are arrested when they reach the ground. Firefighters featured: Edward Gee and Albert Hom Synopsis: Animal rights protesters take over the roof of a fast food chain. Firefighters are called to get them safely to the ground so they can be arrested. Log Line: One fast food chain is under attack from animal rights protesters. Baby Falls Top Description: Firefighters rush through a metro station looking for the child that has been injured. They finally find the mother and baby who are more shaken than hurt. The baby has a small wound on her head and firefighters decide it would be best to take her to the hospital for x-rays. Synopsis: Firefighters rush to the aid of a child who has fallen down a flight of stairs. The baby has a small wound on her head so she is taken to the hospital. Log Line: A mother calls 911 after her baby falls down a flight of stairs. City: Miami Apartment Street Car Top Description of Call: Firefighters respond to an early morning blaze at an apartment complex. The smoke is so intense that they worry any possible victims would be trapped inside. They have little time to respond as the fire starts to lick the walls and roof of neighboring apartments. The firefighters break windows to ventilate the area, and dose water all over the smoldering furniture. When the fire is under control the Overhaul Crew arrives to make sure the fire is completely extinguished. Firefighters featured: Lt. Michael Posner Synopsis: Neighbors watch as an apartment fire gets dangerously close to spreading to their homes. Firefighters work quickly to contain the fire. The overhaul crew takes over to completely extinguish the fire and investigate the cause. Log Line: An apartment fire has firefighters trying different strategies to put out the flames before they spread. Stabbing Air Rescue Top Description of Call: A woman places a call to 911 after she has been stabbed in the liver. Firefighters are first on the scene and quickly realize there is no time to lose. They call air rescue and rush her to the landing zone in a nearby school field. She is then taken to the hospital. Firefighters featured: Bridget Rilla – MDFR Flight Medic Synopsis: A stabbing victim calls 911 and firefighters are the first to respond. Judging the severity of the wound they decide she must be air lifted to the hospital. Air rescue lands in a nearby school field and she is rushed to the hospital. Log Line: A stabbing victim is quickly losing her vital signs so firefighters prepare her for air rescue.
Transit Fire Top Description of call: Firefighters are called to a 100 year-old transit building to put out a fire. Through an aggressive attack on its exterior, the fire fighters gain entry, but a fellow firefighter complains of shortness of breath and is pulled aside to receive medical attention. Fire is eventually put out, but not without the use of extensive manpower. Officer in command: Lt. Peter Lund Synopsis: 100-year-old transit building is engulfed with flames. Extensive manpower is employed to enter the building. Desperate firefighters hurry to put out the blaze before the historic building is left in ruins, but not before a fellow fire fighter is injured. Log Line: 100-year-old transit building turns into an inferno. Fire fighters bring a distressed fire fighter to safety. Cellar Fire Top Description: Firefighters respond to a home on fire. They enter the home and break windows, in an effort to ventilate the heavy smoke. The owner of the home looks on, worried about the extent of damage. The firefighters enter the home and put out a small fire in the basement. Synopsis: Firefighters put out a small fire in a cellar. Log Line: Firefighters search through heavy smoke to find the fire. Pin Job Top Description of Call: Fire fighters are called to a car accident and assist in removing man pinned in his car. The Jaws of Life is used to safely remove the man from the car. The man is later transported to a nearby hospital. Synopsis: Firefighters gear up and are called to a horrible car accident. The fire fighters assist in rescuing a man trapped in the mangled remains of his car. The Jaws of Life is used to free the men who are later transported to the hospital. Log Line: Firefighters are called to a gruesome car accident. They assist in rescuing a man pinned in the twisted remains of his car.
Car Fire Top Description of Call: Firefighters get a call for a car fire. The car is engulfed in flames, and is right next to a dumpster and a row of apartments. They check to make sure smoke has not endangered the residents nearby while other firefighters strategize how to put out the flame. With the possibility of explosion they must proceed with extreme caution. Officers on duty must also break into the car to make sure there has been no other foul play, like murder. Firefighters Featured: Chase Driver Lt. Humpries Synopsis: A car fire in a residential area of Jersey City has firefighters moving quickly to extinguish the flames. The fire spreads to a dumpster. And the adjacent apartment building could be next. Firefighters are worried that the car is on the verge explosion. Log Line: A car fire in residential area on verge of explosion. Log Line: 100-year-old transit building turns into an inferno. Fire fighters bring a distressed fire fighter to safety. Attempted Suicide Top Description of Call: A woman ends a domestic dispute by threatening to commit suicide. By the time firefighters respond she has come down from the window ledge. Her mother and her children are weeping as she is taken away in an ambulance. Firefighters Featured: Chase Driver Lt. Pete Pearson Synopsis: A woman threatening to commit suicide is taken away in an ambulance. Log Line: Firefighters respond to a woman threatening to commit suicide. School Gas Leak Top Description of Call: Firefighters are called to the scene of a gas leak that has occurred when a maintenance crew digging in the area punctured a line. The concern is that the line is on the grounds of a local high school. It has been quickly evacuated. The firefighters are mainly there to support the gas company if any sparks were to ignite the gas. The gas line is promptly switched off and the leaking is stopped. Firefighters Featured: FF Ronnie Gill – Chase Driver, FF Reginal Chandler, FF Harry Wessolleck Synopsis: Firefighters are called to support the crew of the gas company as they stop a leak from a punctured gas line. Log Line: Firefighters respond to a call of a gas leak. Domestic Dispute Top Description of Call: Firefighters arrive on a scene of a domestic dispute. The boyfriend is arrested for hitting his girlfriend in the jaw. The girlfriend is sent to the hospital, but in handcuffs. She has also been arrested for trying to strangle her boyfriend. Officer in Command: Lt. Sean Greene Synopsis: A man and woman are arrested for a domestic dispute. However, the woman must first be taken to the hospital for medical attention. Log Line: Firefighters cool down a heated domestic dispute. City: Los Angeles Structure Fire - Man Dies Top Description of Call: Firefighters respond to calls of a fire in an apartment building. They arrive to the cries of residents that a man is still in his apartment engulfed in smoke. Firefighters reach the man and try to revive him but unfortunately, after much effort, they must rule this fire “with fatality.” Firefighters must determine the cause of the fire and also emotionally deal with the loss of the victim. Officer in Command: Capt. Patrick Hayden Synopsis: Firefighters arrive to fight a fire amidst hysterical tenants. They shout that someone is still in the fire. They get to the man, but he has inhaled too much smoke and has suffered severe burns and has died. Log Line: A fire in an apartment building leaves one man dead. Abandoned House Top Description of Call: Firefighters are dispatched to the site of a fire in an abandoned house. They have to be careful upon entering just to ensure their safety in the event of a back draft or unseen fires within the building. They figure that the fire might have been fueled by rubbish or furniture left in the house. They pull out a desk and put out fire in the drawers. They search for extensions of the fire in the attic. The fire is contained and was probably set by gang members using the house as a hangout, or even a rival gang hoping to smoke the other gang out of the house. Officer in Command: Capt. Paul Sebourn, Capt. Thomas Paulsen Synopsis: Firefighters contain a fire in an abandoned house to the desk where it originated. Writing on the walls gives firefighters the impression that gang members were using the house as a hangout. A rival gang might be to blame for the arson. Log Line: Fire in an abandoned house leads firefighters to the scene where gangs may have been squatting. Burnt Candle Top Description of Call: Firefighters respond to reports of smoke emerging from a building window. They arrive and must break through the door and find that a fire originated from a candle. It has damaged a counter top and a wall in one woman’s apartment. They must check for fire in the attic above the apartment. The woman thanks the firefighters but is upset because she lost pictures and other personal effects. Firefighters Featured: Frank Macias Synopsis: Firefighters arrive on a site where passersby reported seeing smoke. It originated from a candle left unattended in an apartment. Some of the resident’s personal photographs have been lost. Log Line: Firefighters save an apartment from complete destruction when a candle sets a wall on fire. Man With Hole In Head Top Description of Call: Firefighters are called to the scene where a man has possibly suffered an assault and is lying lifeless on a street lined with homeless people and portable toilets. Firefighters search for the man with flashlights. They find him and begin taking steps to prepare him for transport to the hospital after diagnosing his severe head contusion. His vital signs are not within the normal realm necessary to sustain life. Firefighters load him into an ambulance while police seal off the crime scene to collect evidence from the assault. Officer in Command: Capt. Eric Andersen Synopsis: Firefighters search for a man reported to have suffered injury due to an assault. They find him in an area laden with homeless people, lifeless on the ground. They prepare him for transport to the hospital but it doesn’t look like he will survive, his breathing rate is well below normal. Police seal off the crime scene. Log Line: Firefighters try to save a man with a severe head injury while police begin taking steps to investigate the crime.
City: Brooklyn Grocery Store Fire Top Description of Call: Rescue 2 is called to the scene of a multiple dwelling fire. When they arrive, they enter the building to begin searching for victims, while other companies look for the source of the smoke. Realizing the fire is located inside the grocery store on the ground floor, Rescue 2 gains entry using partner saws to cut the locks off the roll-down gate. Word gets to a FDNY paramedic that there may be a four-day old baby trapped inside, but she finds the parents have safely gotten her out. A short time later, the fire is believed extinguished and Rescue 2 is released. They head back to the firehouse, only to be called back to the scene when companies still in the building have discovered hidden fires in the walls and ceilings. Officer in Command: Lt. Pete Lund Synopsis: Firefighters battle a blaze in a residential building with a grocery store on ground level. Once under control, they are released from the scene, only to be called back when other companies discover additional fires in the walls. Log Line: Firefighters extinguish a blaze and are released from the scene, only to be called back when it flares up again. Williamsburg Top Description of Call: Rescue 2 responds to a call of an apartment building fire. When they arrive, their goal is to assist other companies on the scene and to search for victims. The fire is extinguished quickly, but firefighters continue to check for extension. By punching holes in the walls and pulling ceilings down, they not only ventilate the building but also reveal hidden areas that fire can hide. Soon, the “under control” is given and Rescue 2 goes back into service. Officer in Command: Lt. Peter Martin Synopsis: Rescue 2 responds to a call for a burning apartment building. They assist the other companies and search for victims, as well as pulling ceilings to check for fire extension. Log Line: Rescue 2 assists other firefighters at a blaze at an apartment building. Haz Mat Training Top Description of Call: Rescue 2 engages in hazardous materials training in preparation for a terrorist attack. Every rescue company firefighter is a hazmat technician, and in any biological or nerve agent situation they are all trained in what protocol to follow. Their goal in that situation is to rescue as many people as possible, although their captain admits that if hundreds of people were down, it would be a problem. Officer in Command: Capt. Phillip Ruvolo Synopsis: Rescue 2 does hazardous materials training in preparation for terrorism in the form of a biological or nerve agent attack. Log Line: Rescue 2 does hazardous materials training in case of terrorism.
Person Trapped Under Train Top Description of Call: Firefighters respond to an EMS call. The victim is a 14-year-old girl, who was hit and dragged by an 80-ton train, and is currently pinned under the wheel by her left ankle. Medics come onto the scene to evaluate the girl’s injuries; she is in critical condition and is unable to receive painkillers due to internal injuries. Firefighters position jacks and high-pressure air bags in an attempt to lift the train off the victim. The first attempt fails. The second attempt is successful, and the young girl is removed from the train’s undercarriage. Officer in command: Capt. Tony Smerdel Synopsis: Firefighters must work fast to free a 14-year-old girl from beneath an 80-ton light-rail train. There is no time to spare, as the victim is fading in and out of consciousness. Log Line: Young girl is trapped under train with life threatening injuries.
Episode #12 City: Bronx, New York 4 Story Fire Top Description of call: Squad is dispatched to the site of a fire on the 5th floor of a building. They are the third engine to be called to the site. Upon their arrival flames are spewing out the window and people are fleeing in their bedclothes and underwear. A candle left burning in a woman's bedroom ignited the fire. A pillow fell on the candle; the pillow went up in flames and the mattress caught fire soon after. Firefighters worry that the fire is spilling into the hallway and into apartments surrounding the source of the flames. The fire is dosed with water and put out and the walls and the adjacent apartments are inspected to ensure they will not spread fire into other apartments. Everyone is safe though some apartments incurred water damage, but nothing as bad as the apartment in which the fire originated. Civilians Featured: Francis Velasquez Synopsis: Fire fighters are dispatched and arrive to fire spilling out the fifth story windows. A candle left burning unattended is to blame for the blaze that originally ignited a pillow then a mattress. Residents of the apartments surrounding the fire worry that their apartments will also incur damages. The fire does not spread though there is some water damage and major damage to the original apartment. City: Bronx, New York Baby Born Top Description of call: Firefighters are called to the boundary of their jurisdiction to aid a woman giving birth in a six-floor walk-up. They ascend the stairs and enter the apartment to find blood on the hallway floor and the mother sitting in a chair as another woman stands on the other side of the room holding the newborn. Mother and child seem to be in good condition and EMS is on their way to confirm this assumption. This is the second “baby” call this week to which this engine has responded. A nervous mother, her child and the third woman are escorted to the hospital. Officer in Command: Matthew Hanson Synopsis: Engine 75 in the Bronx is called to their second “woman giving birth” call in a week. They arrive to find the baby is already born and mother and child seem to be fine. EMS arrives to verify this fact and all are whisked away to the hospital. Log Line: Mother delivers her own baby and firefighters and EMTs ensure their health and safe arrival at the hospital. City: Bronx, New York Car Motorcycle Top Description of call: There is a multi-car pileup on the Major Deegan Expressway. Five cars and tractor-trailer and a motorcycle are involved. The highway is closed and blocked by a fire truck since cars are strewn about and people sit, some injured, some unscathed, along the median. Car batteries are disconnected to avoid the possibility that they might spark a fire. Determined, EMS and firemen quickly tend to the injured. The motorcyclist walks away only with a scrape on his arm. The highway is dosed with water to dilute the antifreeze spilled from the overturned cars and the highway is reopened shortly thereafter. Synopsis: Police and firefighters are dispatched to a multi-car accident on a major New York City Highway. Five cars, a tractor-trailer and a motorcycle are involved in the crash; the only uninjured party is the motorcyclist. Firefighters and EMS tend to the injured, prevent the ignition of potential fires and prepare the highway to be reopened. Log Line: There is a seven-vehicle pileup, including a motorcycle and a tractor-trailer, on a major New York City highway.
Mall Seizure Top Description of Call: A man had a seizure in a mall and EMS and police are called to the scene. The man wakes up and is completely disoriented. He pleads with the EMTs to let him go then becomes combative. The EMTs believed that he would come around and begin to understand what was going on but he didn’t he simply became more and more combative, violent and loud. They brought him to the hospital where he was treated for his seizure. Firefighter Featured: Chris Pearson Synopsis: A man who suffered a seizure in a mall gets combative and never really comes to understand what happened to him. He pleads with the police and EMTs to let him go. Log Line: Firefighters and police must fight to keep a disoriented man from hurting himself and others. Highway Mattress Fire Top Description of Call: Firefighters are called to the scene of a mattress fire on the freeway. They first assume that there is simply a rubbish fire that was called in as a mattress fire, but to their surprise, there is indeed a mattress burning in the middle of the highway. It, most likely, fell off a truck and then was ignited by a cigarette thrown from a car. Firefighters must contend with cars speeding past on the freeway coming toward them as they deal with the fire. Firefighter Featured: Allen Richards Synopsis: A mattress in the middle of the highway is on fire, much to the disbelief of the firefighters. They douse the mattress with water and pull it to the side of the road. Log Line: Speeding cars impede firefighters ability to combat a mattress fire in the middle of the freeway. Elderly Heart Attack Top Description of Call: Firefighters and paramedics are called to the scene where an elderly man has apparently suffered a heart attack. They are there to either stabilize the man until an ambulance can arrive or support the ambulance and EMS in their efforts to help the man. The man is diabetic and his blood sugar was not controlled properly, which was a possible reason for the heart attack. It is hard to access the man’s condition; because of his age, his normal state might leave him seeming slightly disoriented. Upon their arrival they see flames emerging from the roof and because of the unique structure of the building, everyone from the adjoining buildings must be evacuated. Access to the fire is challenging and firefighters must attack it through the building next door. The fire is not immediately controlled but it is contained in a stairwell and the residents should be able to remain in their homes for the night. Synopsis: Firefighters battle a tricky fire while dealing with access and architectural difficulties in addition to the blaze. They access the fire and contain it in a stairwell and secure the building so that its residents will be able to continue to live there. Log Line: Firefighters contain an intimidating blaze and save the building for the residents. Korean Car Accident Top Description: Firefighters respond to a car accident where one car has rolled over. They check to make sure no one is still stuck inside as well as check the premises to make sure there is no un-environmental leakage. After securing the premises they hand over the accident to the police department and head to the next call. The second call is for a suicide jumper. Half-way to the scene dispatch calls them off with news that “the jumper” is only a woman sunbathing on her roof. Synopsis: A car roll over has firefighters on the move to assist victims and clean up any spills. The fire department is then called to their next call, a suicidal jumper who turns out to be a sunbather. As reinforcements arrive the flames are getting closer and closer to the housing development. Finally the addition of water and firefighters defeats the flames - the homes are safe. Brush Fire 03 Top Description of call: Firefighters battle with a brush fire intensifies when they must prevent the blaze from reaching a school. City: New York Dive Recovery Top Description of Call: Firefighters arrive on the scene where people reportedly saw the rear end of a car in New York City's East River. Divers enter the water to search for the driver of the car. They find her and attempt to revive her and continue their efforts in the ambulance, as they take the unconscious woman to the hospital. Officer in Command: Lt. John Weisheit Synopsis: Firefighters enter New York's East River to rescue a woman whose car plunged into the water. Log Line: Firefighters pull a woman from her car, which plunged into the river. Crane Quandary Top Description of Call: A water main break is endangering the steadiness of a massive crane being used at a New York City construction site. The contractors called 911 because they had very little room to maneuver, should they need to quickly move the crane. Firefighters investigate the flow of water and materials beneath the crane. The crane seems to have shifted a little but doesn’t seem to be in danger of collapsing. Officer in Command: Lt. City: Los Angeles McRubbish Fire Top Description of call: Engine 9 is dispatched to the site of a fire in the dumpsters outside of a McDonald’s on Alameda Street. They suit up in full gear because they have to anticipate the worst. They arrive and assess the situation and confirm that this is a fire they can handle on their own. Within eight minutes of dispatch and five minutes after they arrived on the scene, the fire is under control. Firefighters determine that this blaze was set intentionally but no ignition fluid is found in the dumpsters. A huge cloud of billowing black smoke is caused by the large plastic trays used (to carry buns) in the restaurant. After the engine refills their water tank, they head back to the firehouse, a half-hour after they responded to the call. A park ranger has discovered unattended clothing and personal belongings next to a pond. A scuba diving team is called in to deploy a search pattern. There is limited visibility in the pond, so divers must search by touch and feel. After five hours of diving, no body is found. The following day, the missing person is found in good health. As it turns out, the trailer is a luncheonette, with many possibilities for gas and chemical ignition. The fire is small and extinguished quickly; however, an arson investigator is called to the scene. The owner’s wife arrives to open the restaurant, only to find the charred shell. She maintains that the fire had to have been set by someone because the only thing in the area where the fire started was a garbage dumpster. Synopsis: Firefighters respond to an early-morning fire in a trailer used as a luncheonette. The owner of the trailer maintains that the fire had to have been set purposefully or accidentally by a person who threw something into a dumpster outside her luncheonette. Log Line: A luncheonette goes up in flames and owner believes arsonists are at fault. Elderly Woman In Elevator Top Description of call: This call brought Jersey City's Bravest to the heroic rescue of an elderly woman trapped in an elevator for a half-hour. They climbed the stairs to reach the woman, pry open the doors and lift the woman out. To them, it was a routine elevator extrication but to Stella Perizzo, they were heroes. Synopsis: An elderly woman is trapped in an elevator in her apartment building. Log Line: Firefighters swoop down and rescue an elderly woman from a stalled elevator. Gregory Greene Top Description of call: Firefighters talk emotionally about a very special volunteer who has served their firehouse for more than 35 years. Gregory Greene is said to be as much a part of the fire department as the firefighters who go out and fight fires everyday. His love for the fire department and their love and admiration for him is mutual. They identify the house from which the smoke is coming and find that there is a woman burning leaves in her backyard. Episode #25 City: San Francisco Person Trapped Under Train Top Description: Firefighters respond to an EMS call. The victim is a 14-year-old girl who was hit and dragged by an 80-ton train and is currently pinned under its wheel by her left ankle. Medics come on the scene to evaluate the girl’s injuries; she is in critical condition and is unable to receive painkillers due to internal injuries. Firefighters position jacks and high-pressure air bags in an attempt to lift the train off of her. The first attempt fails. The second attempt is successful, and the young girl is removed from the train’s undercarriage. Officer in Command: Capt. Tony Smerdel Synopsis: Firefighters must work fast to free a fourteen-year-old girl from beneath an 80 ton light-rail train. There is no time to spare, as the victim is fading in and out of consciousness. Log Line: Young girl is trapped under train with life threatening injuries. City: Brooklyn, New York Brownstone Fire Top Description of call: Firefighters respond to a brownstone apartment fire. Fire is located on 2nd floor but spreads to the top floor. Since fire has spread, firefighters are faced with the dangerous task of venting the roof. Within 20 minutes the fire is put out safely. Building resident Jacqueline Anderson believes the fire was caused by an electrical problem. Luckily the fire alarm alerted all residents who were able to escape safely. Firefighters are faced with the daunting task of battling the blaze through the roof, which could cave in at any moment. Fire alarms safely alert resident out of the inferno. City: Dallas Mall Seizure Top Description of Call: A man has a seizure in a mall and EMS and police are called to the scene. The man wakes up and is completely disoriented. He pleads with the EMT’s to let him go and then becomes combative. The EMTs believe that he will come around and begin to understand what is going on but instead he becames more combative, violent and loud. They bring him to the hospital where he is treated for his seizure. Episode #28 City: Jersey City Boy Overdose Top Description of Call: Engine 22 is dispatched to the New Jersey Turnpike to find a victim of reported drug overdose. A witness has seen someone in the thin brush below the overpass and called the police. Firefighters descend into the brush with a thermal imaging camera to see if they can find the person. They come upon a boy 20 minutes later who has indeed overdosed on drugs and is lying on the ground in the rain. Another five minutes and he would have been dead. Fire And Fists Top Description of Call: After being called to a kitchen fire, firefighters must quell tempers that have flared up in response to the flames. As the woman come to blows over the fire, it is all caught on the “Vest Cam.” The woman whose apartment was in flames explains to the Captain what happened while yelling at her neighbor off camera. Accident To Smoke Top Description of Call: Firefighters are in route to an industrial accident when they find out that it is already under control so they continue on to the next call of fire in a high rise. They arrive to find smoke coming from one apartment where someone left food on the stove unattended. Toast Top
City: Brooklyn, NY Projects Fire Top Medal Day Top Description of call: New York’s Bravest are honored fat an awards ceremony at City Hall for the bravery they exhibit everyday. A few firefighters reflect on how their job has touched them and what being a firefighter means to them, their spouses and their children. New York City’s Mayor celebrates and acknowledges the bravest of The Bravest. Sunset Park Top Description of Call: Firefighters are called while eating dinner. They are dispatched to a two-story multiple dwelling fire in Sunset Park, an area known for drug use. During their route to the fire, they are re-routed to another blaze on the 4th floor of a building. The firefighters arrive and quickly extinguish the fire. The firefighters then do a full search of the apartment to check for victims or if the fire has spread. The apartment is abandoned, and firefighters believe the fire was started by an individual who was smoking crack. Rubbish Fire Top Description of Call: Firefighters respond to a call regarding an outdoor rubbish fire. The fire is near a Queen Anne style home built with much flammable material. They search the area, including a synagogue where a circumcision is taking place, for fire extensions. The circumcision is postponed until the firefighters have finished their search. City: Washington, D.C. Woman Dragged Out Top Description of Call: Firefighters walk into a smoke-filled apartment building and split up to find not only the fire, but victims of smoke inhalation. One woman is found unconscious next to her bed and is carried outside. Firefighters revive her with oxygen, but when the woman comes to, she tries to refuse hospital treatment. The EMS technicians put her on a gurney and strap her down because she is petulant and combative. Heroin O.D. Top Description of Call: Paramedics are called to a home where a man has apparently overdosed on heroin. Paramedics give him a drug that counteracts heroin and essentially brings him back to life after he stopped breathing. He wakes up and is taken to the hospital. Bicycle Theft Top Description of call: Lt. Hottinger is preparing dinner. The meal is interrupted for a possible hit-and-run call. There is an injured man with a bicycle, who was apparently hit by a car. A witness enters the scene and tells the police officers that the bicycle had just been stolen. The injured man is searched and arrested.
City: Miami, FL House Fire Started By Kid Top Description of Call: Fire has swept through a house and the firefighters arrived to do the final sweep. The fire was located and extinguished, but the house incurred heavy smoke damage. Firefighters ascertain that the fire was a direct result of kids playing with matches in the middle of the night.Officer in Command: Capt. Bill Gustin Live Wire Top Description of Call: Firefighters are called because an electrical wire has fallen to the ground during a lighting storm. The wire continues to conduct electricity and cannot be touched. Firefighters are powerless against the high currents of electricity flowing through the wire, but set parameters to keep people safe until the electric company can turn the power off at its source. Teen Car Accident Top Description of Call: Firefighters respond to an accident on the highway where a car crashed into the median. The driver, a young woman, wasn’t wearing her seatbelt and sustained a deep laceration on her leg. Paramedics give him a drug that counteracts Heroin and essentially brings him back to life after the Heroin stopped his breathing. He wakes up and is taken to the hospital. Valley Brush Fire Top Description of Call: A huge number of firefighters are dispatched to combat a brush fire in the San Fernando Valley laden with trees and foliage ready to be ignited. A multitude of fire trucks, helicopters and hand crews and needed to combat the fire that has the capacity to overcome some of the most expensive houses in the country. Hand crews are comprised of women from the local prison who will do what they can to combat the fire and subsequent fires until their release date. LA-MVA/Minivan Top Description of Call: An arson unit that passed by the scene of a multi-car accident calls Los Angeles Bravest to the scene. Within three minutes, two engines and two ambulances arrive. The Jaws of Life are primed and ready if needed. There is a multitude of injuries, many from airbag deployment, and the firefighters are concerned that sparks might ignite the fuel. The car batteries are disconnected. As it turns out, none of the injuries are life threatening, very few people are even taken to the hospital. One half-hour later, the firefighters are on their way home. Walk-in Asthma Top Description of Call: A person complaining of an asthma attack walks into the firehouse. Firefighters tend to him immediately by trying to calm his breathing and by administering oxygen. Police and firefighters admit that the possibility of injury in this type of accident is great. One person was stuck in the car, as they cut away the metal to remove the injured driver. They remove three people from the car, including once child, and bring them to the hospital. Trash Can Fire Top Description of Call: Charcoal from a barbeque thrown in the trash sparks a fire. Firefighters arrive on the scene and douse it with water. It was feared that had it burned any longer, it would have ignited a wooden garage door nearby.

The building has been on fire more than once and firefighters are familiar with the structure and its pitfalls. VW Accident Top Description of Call: Firefighters get a call of a confirmed pin job after a car rammed into iron pylons near a sidewalk. Witnesses recount that a man came by and pulled the victim out of the burning car and then disappeared. Firefighters prepare the victim for transport, trying desperately to keep him coherent and conscious in case of a head injury. Sometimes elevators have to be cut open to release the passengers. Woman With Chest Pains Top Description of Call: Firefighters rush to a scene where a woman is suffering from chest pains. They treat her at the scene with oxygen and then ensure her safe transport to the hospital. Building Collapse Top Description of Call: Firefighters respond to the call of a building collapse. The contractor working on the building maintains that his crew dismantled the façade and that it did not collapse, but firefighters are concerned that the walls of the building are not secure. Firefighters instruct the contractor to provide additional support to the adjoining walls, and once complete, they leave the building and believe it to be safe.
First On Scene Top Description of Call: Dallas firefighters and EMTs are the first to arrive on the scene of a car accident on the highway. Prior to their arrival, a certified nurse passing by stopped to aid the victims. One man cannot remove himself from the vehicle because of a suspected neck injury, and though he appears to be coherent, he will not inform the EMTs of his injuries. As it turns out, the occupants were filming a movie that included a smoke machine which set off the alarm. They find that the steam room in a spa is a possible trigger for the alarm. They still make sure that there isn’t a fire. Restaurant Investigation Top Description of Call: Firefighters extinguish papers that caught on fire in the kitchen of a restaurant. They call in an arson investigator who can determine what might have started the fire. They suggest that someone turned on the power which led to a faulty power outlet resulting in a fire. City: Dallas Three Alarm Fire Top Description of Call: Firefighters are dispatched to a large-scale fire, which extended laterally and horizontally throughout half of the entire structure. The smoke had already become visible for miles and the heat of the day was not helping the firefighters in their plight. One firefighter got a little lightheaded and dizzy. The firefighters fight on and knock the three-alarm fire down. Woman Hit By Car Top Description of Call: Firefighters rush to the aid of a woman who has been hit by a car. Episode #40 City: Bronx, NY Car Accident - Persons Pinned Top Description of Call: Firefighters arrive on the scene of a two-car accident to aid the victims that are still pinned in the cars. They pry the door off one of the cars and protect the victims from further injury with collars and backboards and await the arrival of the ambulances to get the people to the hospital. Apparently the ambulances had a busy night as it took them a while to get to the scene. Couple Trapped In Elevator Top Description of Call: Firefighters arrive on the scene of a call where two people are trapped in an elevator. They identify the floor on which the elevator is stuck and then find the right key to open the doors and release the people. Handicapped Trapped Top Description of Call: A handicapped woman is trapped in the lobby of her building because the elevator is broken and she cannot reach her apartment. Firefighters suggest calling EMS to see if they have a bed for her for the night, but then resort to carrying her in her wheelchair up six flights of stairs. Rubbish Fire Top Description of Call: Firefighters respond to an apartment building where there were reports of a smell of gas emanating throughout the building. They find that a new stove was installed and though potentially dangerous, they’re able to contain the fumes and eliminate the risk of fire.

Upon arrival they notice smoke coming from the brush beyond a fence, separating the tracks from the road. They cut through the fence carefully, so as not to cut the power line working the tracks, and extinguish the fire ensuring that it will not re-ignite. Murder/Car Accident Top Description of Call: Firefighters are in-route to a multi-vehicle accident and are re-routed to a shooting victim. The victim has no signs of life but is transported to the hospital to be confirmed DOA status. Just blocks from the murder, Engine 6 proceeds to the scene of the motor vehicle accident where they aid other firefighters, who have already removed the roof of a car to extricate the victim. Back House Fire Top Description of Call: Firefighters knock down a fire that rapidly climbed the back wall of a three-story dwelling. After searching for extensions and finding embers in some of the walls, the fire is finally extinguished.

City: New York Major Deegan Top Description of Call: New York's Bravest are called to the site of an overturned truck on the Major Deegan Expressway, the road that connects three New York boroughs. The driver is coherent and able to explain that his breaks gave out and his truck overturned. Gas spills out of the vehicle and firefighters must deal with the hazardous materials. The truck is then righted and hauled away.Officer in Command: Capt. Thomas Kelly Laundry Fire Top Description of Call: A blaze is reported in a laundromat on an upper floor of a building. Upon, arrival, firefighters spot smoke coming from the roof near a duct. Carbon monoxide is the firefighters worst enemy in this fight because sprinklers force the deadly gas down to where they need to walk. They determine that some lint stuck in a duct behind a dryer ignited, and the fire spread into ducts in the wall. Firefighters make sure the fire has not spread into the ceilings or anywhere else.
